The transition to "Big School" is a major milestone for both children and parents in Woking. A common misconception is that children need to know how to read or write their full name before they start.
What Does "School Ready" Really Mean?
According to Reception teachers at schools like Westfield Primary, "school readiness" is less about academics and more about independence, resilience, and social skills. If a child can sit and listen for a short period, look after their own belongings, and communicate their needs, they are ready to learn.
At Magical Moments Preschool, we focus on these foundational skills in the year leading up to school to ensure every child feels confident.
The Woking Parent's Readiness Checklist
Toilet Independence
Children should be able to go to the toilet, wipe themselves, and wash hands without help. Independence here gives them huge confidence in a busy school environment.
Dressing Themselves
Practise putting on coats and zipping them up. Velcro shoes are a parent's best friend for those first few terms in Reception.
Recognising Their Name
They do not need to write it perfectly, but being able to spot their name label on a coat peg or book bag is extremely helpful for daily school life.
Social Confidence
Encourage sharing, taking turns, and asking for help. Using their voice to resolve minor conflicts is a skill we practice daily at preschool.
Eating Independently
Practise using a knife and fork, or opening lunchbox containers and water bottles. School hall lunchtimes can be fast-paced, so these skills are vital.
How We Support the Transition
In the summer term, we work closely with local schools in Woking to ensure a smooth handover. We complete Transition Records that share your child's interests and developmental stage with their new teacher.
We also engage in activities like trying on school uniforms in our role-play area and reading stories about starting school to normalize the process and reduce anxiety.
A Message for Parents
Every child develops at their own pace. If your child has not mastered all these skills by September, do not panic. Woking schools are very experienced at helping children settle. The goal is for your child to feel happy, safe, and excited about their new adventure.
