There is no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing! At Magical Moments Preschool, we believe the outdoors is an extension of our classroom, a place where children can shout louder, run faster, and explore on a grand scale.
The Importance of Outdoor Learning
In an increasingly digital world, connecting with nature is more important than ever. Research shows that outdoor play improves physical health, reduces stress, and boosts immune systems.
Our secure garden area in Westfield is open daily, rain or shine. We encourage parents to pack wellies and waterproofs so that rain puddles become opportunities for splashing rather than reasons to stay inside.
What We Do Outside
Our outdoor curriculum is just as planned and varied as our indoor one:
Physical Challenges
Bikes, scooters, and climbing frames help develop balance, coordination, and core strength. These "gross motor skills" are the foundation for sitting still at a desk later in life.
Nature Detectives
We go on bug hunts, looking for worms after the rain or spiders spinning webs. This sparks curiosity about the natural world and teaches respect for living things.
Construction Play
Large wooden blocks, crates, and tyres allow children to build dens and obstacle courses. This requires teamwork, planning, and heavy lifting!
Gardening
We plant seeds, water flowers, and sometimes grow vegetables. Children learn about life cycles and where their food comes from (and they're more likely to eat a carrot they grew themselves!).
Risk and Resilience
Outdoor play offers "risky play" in a safe environment. Balancing on a log or jumping off a low step teaches children to assess risk and know their own limits.
If they fall, they learn to brush themselves off and try again. This builds resilience, a key trait for success in later life.
Our Local Environment
We are lucky to be situated in Westfield, with plenty of greenery around us. We often incorporate natural materials like pine cones, leaves, and sticks into our art and counting activities, bridging the gap between nature and education.
Whether it's making "perfume" from flower petals or building a home for a hedgehog, outdoor learning creates magical moments that children remember forever.
