The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) is more than just a classroom curriculum. It is a framework for how your child grows, learns, and interacts with the world. You do not need expensive toys or formal lesson plans to support this development at home.
Communication and Language
This is the foundation of everything else. The simplest way to help is to talk to your child about what you are doing. If you are cooking dinner, describe the ingredients, the smells, and the textures.
Reading together for just ten minutes a day makes a huge difference. Ask questions about the pictures and predict what might happen next. This builds vocabulary, comprehension, and a love for stories.
Physical Development
Help your child develop their "fine motor skills" through everyday activities. This includes using safety scissors, threading pasta onto string, or playing with playdough. These movements strengthen the small muscles in the hands, which eventually helps with writing.
For "gross motor skills," encourage active play. Jumping, climbing at the park, or even a living room dance party helps with balance, coordination, and physical confidence.
Personal, Social, and Emotional Development
At home, you can support this by encouraging independence. Let your child try to put on their own coat or help with simple chores like putting toys away.
Talking about feelings is also vital. Use stories to discuss how characters might be feeling and why. This helps children develop empathy and understand their own emotions.
Literacy and Mathematics
You do not need flashcards to teach maths. Count the steps as you walk up them, sort the laundry by colour, or count the pieces of fruit in the bowl. This makes numbers a natural and fun part of daily life.
For literacy, point out signs and labels when you are out shopping. Encourage your child to "write" shopping lists or birthday cards, even if it is just marks and scribbles at first.
Expert Advice
At Magical Moments Preschool, we follow the EYFS framework every day. We believe that children learn best when they are having fun and feeling secure. The most important thing you can provide at home is encouragement and the freedom for your child to explore their own interests.
